A regular can of soda is usually sweetened with HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP which we know is aiding in the increase in obesity and diabetes not only here but everywhere in the world. For us low carb dieters and diabetics, if we want to drink a diet soda, it usually ends up being something sweetened with aspartame which some people are linking to cancer. Almost every diet soda uses aspartame as it’s the sweetener. A few low carb sodas use Splenda and even fewer use Stevia.
As a low carb dieter, I don’t want to give up diet soda but I don’t want to drink anything with aspartame in it. I also don’t like the cost of name brand sodas like Diet Coke and Diet Sprite which can be $0.50 or more when you buy a multi-pack or a dollar or more from a vending machine.
So when I learned about Sodastream Home Soda Makers and their Value Kits, I was intrigued.
Home Soda Makers
Think of a Sodastream Home Soda Maker as a compact, easy to use soda fountain for your kitchen counter. With the quick press of a button a few times, you can turn ordinary tap water into sparkling water or soda in half a minute. (I prefer to use bottled or filtered water for a cleaner taste) With the home soda maker, I’m saving money, protecting the environment and still enjoying the taste of diet soda whenever I want.
Each Sodastream Home Soda Maker kit comes with:
The Soda Maker
Sodastream comes in over a half dozen different models at different price points – I bought the Sodastream Fizz. The soda maker does not use electricity and comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee and a two-year manufacturer’s warranty.
The Environmentally-Conscious Reusable Carbonating Bottles
These specially designed, high pressure-resistant bottles are BPA-free and can be reused for up to 2 years. The fizz-preserving cap that comes with every bottle helps to keep your drinks fresh and fizzy longer than traditional store-bought bottles. Better taste from a better design.
Carbonator
SodaStream Carbonators are the key to the Home Soda Maker. These lightweight aluminum CO2 (carbon dioxide) containers are connected the the Home Soda Maker and ensure the safety and purity of the soda you make. Each kit comes with a CO2 carbonator that when empty, can be exchanged with Sodastream (through multiple authorized retailers located throughout the country). SodaStream takes back the cylinder to be cleaned, inspected, refilled and reused.
Flavored Syrups
The beauty of the whole Sodastream product is that they make over 50 different Concentrated Soda Mixes including regular, diet, and caffeine-free sodas as well as energy drinks, ice teas, and sparkling water options. As low carb dieters, we are only interested in the sugar free flavors but if you have people in your home that drink regular soda, they can use the Sodastream too.
The diet Sodastream mixes are sweetened with Splenda instead of aspartame. Now, I know some people don’t like Splenda and if that is you, then you probably won’t want a Sodastream Soda Maker. But I personally am ok with Splenda as a sweetener so I can enjoy all the diet flavors. Why don’t they make flavors with Stevia? Probably because Stevia is expensive and hard to mix with. It’s hard to please everyone and if you want diet soda, I believe Splenda is a much better choice than aspartame.
Each Concentrated Soda Flavor Mix makes the equivalent of 33 cans of soda! How’s that for cost-effective!

Cost-Effective
One of the benefits of the Home Soda Maker is how inexpensive it is to make your own diet soda. According to the Sodastream web site, each 12 oz. serving will cost you $0.25 while decreasing the amount of soda you purchase that goes flat or is wasted. They also promote that with their reusable bottles, you’ll never have to deal with bottle deposits or recycling issues like we do with plastic or aluminum containers.
But, How Does It Taste?
The most important thing to me was just how good were the diet flavors going to taste. And you know what? They’re very good and some of them are even awesome! I’ve tried about 7 or 8 flavors so far and my favorites are Diet Pink Grapefruit, Diet Root Beer, and Diet Orange. I believe they taste exactly like store bought soda.
Convenience
The Home Soda Maker was easy to put together – only taking about 5 minutes to assemble. Each time I need to make a liter of soda, it takes less than a minute from start to finish.
The Home Soda Maker is great to purchase for yourself or as the perfect gift for the diet soda lover you know.

You don’t need to spend money on all their flavors which are really full of nasty stuff. A Squirt of lemon or lime in the carbonated water tastes great! Or drop in a few berries. Fruity tasting herbal teas (unsweetened) made in concentrated form work great, too.
I’ve had my Soda Stream since August and I LOVE it! Diet Ginger Ale is one of my faves as is the Diet Cola Lime. I also take the Diet Cherry Cola and mix it with the regular Diet Cola. My mother really likes the Caffeine Free Diet Cola. My husband isn’t as big of a fan of it, but he does like the Diet Orange. However, we (hubby and I) agree that the Crystal Light Peach Tea is awful. (sorry..)
