CarbSmart Podcast Episode 23: Refusing Holiday Food and Staying Low-Carb can be tough at first but you can do it to avoid the Food Pushers. The holidays are straight ahead, and with them piles and piles of carby junk, and worse, people nagging you to eat the stuff. Why so many people think that saying things like "But you have to eat it! It's traditional!" and "I worked all afternoon making it just for you" constitutes an expression of holiday goodwill, I have no idea, but sadly this behavior is all too common. You need to think ahead about how to respond to this sort of thing.

  1. I enjoyed your peanut butter cups with maltitol but…. I paid for it later in the day. The maltitol does not digest well. I ended up with horrible gas.

I had given my Mother… A diabetic some of you chocolates for Christmas as “Sugar Free” was written on the package. I was led to believe that “Sugar Free” was safe for her to eat!!!… Her blood sugars spiked!!. Not a good gift for her at all. In fact a dangerous one!!

After these two experiences, I looked up maltitol and found out that it acts like sugar in our bodies and even though it isn’t sugar.. it is almost as bad for diabetics as sugar… and is known for giving people gas!

I’m really not happy about this and feel that there should be warnings on the packaging so that others don’t need to suffer!

    Sincerely: Heather Jones

    • Products with maltitol as an ingredient are not for everyone.

Most sugar-free products do not spike blood sugar but it can happen in some people.

There are absolutely warnings on the bags. “Excess consumption may cause a laxative effect.”

      • I always find myself wondering what these candy makers consider “excessive consumption”. Because the number of sugar-free chocolates (that is, small, bite sized pieces, hard or soft) that it takes to send me to the bathroom all day is two. Not ten. Not twenty. Not two-hundred. Not two pounds. Two.

The reason people want stevia chocolate is because stevia is not maltitol. I saw these things in the store, and was instantly disappointed upon reading the label. Was hoping other chocolate makers were finally starting to read their audience but I suppose it was not meant to be.

I will be sticking with Lily’s.

  2. I LOVE these! Have eaten an entire bag and NEVER experienced ill effects. The Coconut are awesome!

  3. I thought that Stevia was the only sugar replacement in Russell Stover mini, sugar free candies, until reading current labels showing Malitol included. One or maybe two morsels after dinner has recently caused my next day starting unexpected bathroom visits. I have changed my high fibre diet this week and looked for the source of the cause. I put away rather than enjoyed my Malitol Stovers tonight. Things could be changed, I hope.

    • Russell Stover Sugar-Free candies and chocolates have always had maltitol as a sweetener but they used to add Splenda and now Stevia as an additional sweetener.

Yes, Russell Stover, it is deceptive and that is why we say on this website, Sweetened with Stevia & Maltitol.

      Andrew

  4. Do diabetics need to count the total carbohydrates of these stevia chocolates or just count the NET carbs?
