As low carbers, we are so used to not having bread that the thought of having an actual submarine sandwich is too foreign to us. I remember the amazing sub sandwiches I would get in my hometown of Rochester, NY, but they were definitely not low carb.
That’s why when LC Foods asked me to review their Low Carb Fresh Baked Sub Rolls, I couldn’t wait. LC Foods sells these pre-made sub rolls in a package of 3. They come ready to eat, each one weighing about 13 oz. They look, feel and smell like real sub rolls, but only have 3 net carbs per 1/2 roll. How do they accomplish this? By using resistant starches as their main ingredients.
The Science of Resistant Starches
There are three types of starches–rapidly digested starch (which breaks down quickly into simple sugars), slowly digested starch (like whole barley) and resistant starch (which reaches the large intestine without being broken down into sugars at all). Most of LC Foods’ products use resistant starches as part of their main ingredients.
From Wikipedia:
Ok that’s a lot of science, but what that really means is that resistant starches pass through the digestive system mostly untouched and not absorbed or processed until it reaches the large intestine where it is consumed or fermented by colonic bacteria.
How Do the Low Carb Fresh Baked Sub Rolls Taste?
I have previously reviewed their Low Carb Fresh Baked Multi Grain Bread so I was expecting them to be good. According to the manufacturer, each 1/2 roll is just 3 net carbs, 588 calories, and an amazing 53g of protein. That means you can have a good-sized low carb submarine sandwich and not blow your low carb diet.
And yes, this is a low-carb sub sandwich roll that tastes like the real thing. Dense, tasty bread that soaks up anything you put on it like salad dressing or mayonnaise and still stays firm but doesn’t get soggy. I choose lettuce, tomato and mayo for the base, then added ham, turkey, and roast beef as well as cheddar, Swiss, and jack cheese. This brought me back to my days in Rochester. With LC Foods’ Low Carb Fresh Baked Sub Rolls, I can have sub sandwiches again.
This is a hearty low carb sandwich roll that I think is even too much for me! Instead of a half sub, I could only finish a 1/4 of the sandwich and still felt full. That means a package of 3 sub rolls can feed 12 low carbers comfortably! Think about the guys watching their next football game on TV or the party tray you can make. No one will even need to know this is low carb bread. I give this great tasting low carb sub roll 4.5 stars out of 5!
