CarbSmart Podcast Episode 23: Refusing Holiday Food and Staying Low-Carb can be tough at first but you can do it to avoid the Food Pushers. The holidays are straight ahead, and with them piles and piles of carby junk, and worse, people nagging you to eat the stuff. Why so many people think that saying things like "But you have to eat it! It's traditional!" and "I worked all afternoon making it just for you" constitutes an expression of holiday goodwill, I have no idea, but sadly this behavior is all too common. You need to think ahead about how to respond to this sort of thing.

I purchased the ipad version of the magazine, but it will not open after downloading the app. It dropped the magazine into news stand but won’t respond. Thanks.

  2. just trying to figure out if ive been subscribed to the low carb magazine.. Ive looked on my apple ipad and iphone and cant seem to find it. Also will it be on kindle?

    • Hi Linda,
Not sure if this issue has been addressed for you yet, so I’ll see if I can help here. Did you download the CarbSmart app to your ipad? And did you subscribe through the CarbSmart app store? Maybe we can figure it out from there.

      • hi
I purchased my carbsmart app from the carbsmart website through iTunes for my ipad. I have the app in my shelf in my ipad. I was hoping to have one for my apple iphone but not sure this is even obtainable yet. Also I haven’t had anything in a response to whether im signed up for a yearly subscription which I have paid for.. im just looking for a little info on how my account is doing … thanks , linda

        • Hi Linda, we do not have a version for the iPhone right now, just the iPad. We are considering an iPhone version for the future.

If you paid for the yearly subscription, you should be able to immediately download the current issue on the iPad.

          Sincerely,
          Andrew

  3. I signed up to pay monthly, received the April magazine, but not May, looking forward to it and meal suggestions, what happened?

    • Hi Dot,
The May issue is in production and almost finished. We are working hard to soon have each issue come out a couple of weeks before the issue month. Thanks for your patience while we get it all put together!

  4. I just bought the year subscription but when I open it on news stand it has the little icon in the middle and the magazine faintly in the back but I can’t see it due to the blackness of the page and the icon that won’t go away. Please help. I have tried rebooting my ipad and still not working.

  5. Has the June 2013 issue come out yet?

    • Hello, we are finishing the June issue and I am expecting it to be ready within a week or so. When it is ready it will either be downloaded automatically to your iPad or you will be prompted to download it.

The July issue has been written and we are going to try to publish it as soon as possible after we publish June.

      Sorry for the delay.

      Andrew

  6. Every time I open the June issue … It tells me I need ti update my app to read it: “Issue is designed for a newer version of the app and may display incorrectly. Update the app in the App Store”

I click the button to go to the App Store and it opens the app summary, but the only option is to OPEN. There is no update option. I have 1.0. Why do I keep getting prompted to update when there is no update?

My iPad is 4th gen with all updates.

  7. Why no app for Android users?!?!

    • From our FAQ ABOUT CARBSMART MAGAZINE:

      • If you have a Customer Service issue with the iPad version of CarbSmart Magazine start here.
      • Downloadable PDF versions of the March 2013 thru May 2013 issues are now available. We will have the June, July/August, & September issues available soon. Due to the lack of technology options to manage a subscription service for the downloadable PDFs, we can not offer subscriptions to the downloadable PDFs.
      • We are still actively working on the Amazon Kindle Fire and Google Android tablet versions which we hope to have ready in August 2013. We will have all back issues available. It takes a little extra time to create these versions.
      • There will not be a printed edition. The economics of printing and distributing a physical version of the magazine is just not possible.
      • We will announce it on this web page and in the newsletter when these versions are available.

      Sincerely,
      Andrew

  8. When the CarbSmart magazine came out I purchased one copy to review. After reading it cover-to-cover I immediately went back and purchased an annual subscription. I started having problems with the auto-download feature with the Aug.Sept issue, receiving it nearly 3 weeks late. Now on Oct. 19th, I’m waiting on the October issue to arrive. I looked on some of the Apple forums to see if there have been issues on their end, but I don’t see much for 2013, at least nothing to resolve the issue. Maybe you should convert to Kindle or Nook versions. Anyway, I was wondering if anyone else was having this issue. Thanks for your open comments section.

    • Most of the time this works:

      • Go to the CarbSmart Magazine app in Newsstand and tap the screen to get the menu at the bottom of the screen to appear.
      • Tap the “Library” button.
      • If any issues are missing, tap the “Missing Issues?” button in the top left corner of the screen.

Let me know if that works.

      • This didn’t work for me but I tried rebooting a couple of times then came back to this page and clicked on the magazine image link which took me to iTunes download button for the magazine. That did work for me. The long way around but nonetheless got me what I was looking for. It may work for someone else at some point. Thank you for responding :o)

      • I have the same problem. Been waiting patienlty for the October issue to appear and tomorrow is the 30th. I’ve tried getting “missing issues” twice now. No luck. Since I subscribe to this magazine I would think it would appear automatically on my iPad newsstand each month when it comes out, as my other subscriptions do. This is not the first time the issue hasn’t appeared. It seems to be a good magazine but you sure have publication issues.

Where is the October issue on my iPad ?

        • I am very sorry you are having trouble with the download of the issue.

Possible solutions for iPad not downloading or displaying issues.

          1) Try turning off the iPad and turning it back on (fully re-booting it by holding down the power button at the top of the screen and then swiping the red “slide to power off” button). Then go back into the app and see if the issue is downloaded.

          2) Is it possible that your iPad is full with little or no room for downloads? I am finding this is a common reason for a download problem in iTunes. The best way to check is to sync with iTunes on your computer or open Settings > General > Storage. Some other solutions include removing some music or video files you no longer use or removing some apps. It is ask possible to remove old issues of CarbSmart Magazine. You do not lose them, you always own them, you would have to re-load them to read them again.

          3) Most of the time this works:

          * Go to the CarbSmart Magazine app in Newsstand and tap the screen to get the menu at the bottom of the screen to appear.
          * Tap the “Library” button.

  9. I am having trouble with the November issue. I have it downloaded, but every time I open the issue and go to an article it stays on my IPad for about 2 seconds, goes black and then returns to the News Stand shelf. I’ve archived it and re-downloaded, restarted the IPad 3 or 4 times, archived all issues and reloaded October issue just to check….it works fine. I love the magazine and was really looking forward to this issue.
    Any ideas to help?

    • we believe there is an error in the file. We have uploaded a new version and we believe if you try to re-upload the issue (the app should ask you automatically) that it should be fixed. Please try to re-download after 7pm tonight.

      Andrew

    • Evy:

I believe the problem with November 2013 issue of CarbSmart Magazine is fixed. We believe it was only affecting the non-retina version of the magazine. To fix it, open the CarbSmart Magazine app, tap the screen to show the menu at the bottom, click the “Library” button, press the green “read” button for the issue so the issue will re-download.

This will fix it. For some people, it might be suggested to after re-downloading the issue to re-boot the iPad.

Please let me know if that works for you.

      Sincerely,
      Andrew

  10. I just subscribed and got my receipt from itunes. I downloaded the November issue, but when I try to open it, it is grayed out and not readable. I have shut down my ipad and re-opened without succees.

    • Jeanne:

I know it seems like the CarbSmart Magazine app is the problem but unfortunately sometimes there are other factors that create iPad Newsstand errors. Possible solutions for iPad not downloading or displaying issues.

      1) Do you have the latest version of iOS software (7.0.4), the latest iTunes Newsstand App, and CarbSmart Magazine app 3.0?

      Tap the “Library” button.
Press the “Archive” button for the issue that is not downloading. Confirm you want to archive it.
Once it is archived, press the download button again to redownload it.

  11. I subscribed back in the fall and received 5 issues which are now in my library. For $19.99 I would have expected to receive all the 2013 issues. Now, as of Jan. 2, 2014 I have been charged an additional $19.99 and cannot access any of the 4 remaining 2013 issues. They don’t appear in my library but show up in the store where i am invited to purchase for $3.99 each. I have rebooted, searched itunes, and carbsmart and cannot find a solution to the problem.

  12. I purchased a one year subscription for $19.99 in 2013 and received 5 issues in my library. There are 4 remaining issues for 2013 which did not download. They appear in the store with the invitation to purchase for $3.99 each. On Jan. 2, 2014 my iTunes account was charged an additional $19.99 with a message that it extends my subscription until Jan. 2015. Why didn’t the remaining 2013 issues come into the library as part of the 2013 subscription? My understand is that issues are $1.99 each if you subscribe for a year. I am feeling ripped off. I have tried restoring missing issues, rebooting, etc. but no luck.
